It’s time for US Servas to begin the process of selecting new leaders. It’s time for US Servas to begin the process of selecting new leaders.  We have two open positions on the Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee is seeking suitable candidates: volunteers who have some idea of what Servas does (nationally and internationally), have done effective work for Servas—serving on local or national committees, putting on Servas events and have traveled or hosted with Servas or had similar experiences with purposeful travel.

The deadline to submit your (or someone else’s) name to the nominating committee is Monday, February 24, 2014.  Members of the 2014 nominations committee are

If you wish to vote for Director candidates, you must be an elector.  If you are a host and indicated that you wish to vote in the election when you renewed—you are an elector and will automatically receive a ballot.  If you are not sure whether you are an elector, or you wish to be one, please call, write or email the office and request to be an elector before Monday, April 7, 2014.

To be counted, a ballot MUST be received in the Arcata office by Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 4:00 pm PT.

If you would like to submit a resolution to be voted on at the Annual Membership Meeting, the deadline to do this is Tuesday, April 15, 2014.  Copies of all resolutions will be available on our website and the deadline for comments from members who will not be at the meeting is Wednesday, June 4, 2014

Board members are expected to

  • Attend and participate in annual membership meetings, board meetings and the board retreat. Board members are encouraged to pay their own expenses, which are tax-deductible, when possible.
  • Be familiar with board roles and responsibilities as outlined in the bylaws.
  • Review prior board decisions  and organizational structure in  order to participate as fully as possible in Board discussions.
  • Nurture the growth of Servas, both in the regional area one represents and nationally.
  • Undertake a major project or committee responsibility for which you will be the main liaison between the Board and on-going work of US Servas.
  • Enhance the overall strength and effectiveness of the Board in “wealth, wisdom, and work” through one’s own efforts and one’s choice of new Board members.
  • Sign a conflict of interest statement

With the exception of the annual board retreat, usually held in conjunction with the National Membership Meeting, board and committee meetings take place by conference call at a time that is convenient for all board members.

Are you between 18 and 30-something? Would you like to improve your foreign language skills outside of a classroom?? Would you like to have a meaningful cultural exchange?? Do you have a month or more to commit to the unique learning experience that can only be found in travel??? The SYLE program is free with Servas membership and is seeking participants. SYLE (Servas Youth Language Experience) is a program designed for young Servas members to learn a language through a Servas cultural exchange during one month in a foreign country. Through SYLE we also hope to strengthen the integration of national local groups, as well as to promote the participation of young people in Servas.

But wait! There’s more! US Servas is proud to present the Dennis Mogerman Youth Scholarship fund!!! Dennis Mogerman, long time Servas member and traveler, is now generously offering for Servas Youth the financial assistance you may need to make your dreams a travel a reality. Two $500 scholarships are currently available for individuals who wish to participate in a SYLE. They will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need and a commitment to the promotion of Servas among youth.
