US Family Experiences: One Black, One White - 150 years

  • November 21, 2021
  • 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM (EST)

Ms. Milton will share the story of the two families, one black, one white (slave and slaveholder) and how their lives intertwined in fascinating connections.  Her research of these two families spans more than 150 years and reveals serendipitous findings that brought her to the doorstep of her family's slave holder.  She currently owns a physical piece of that history. Using court documents, vital records, and the generosity  strangers, she identifies and reconnects a family lost by history.

Her presentation contains images of the marriage licenses, death certificates, slaveholder's will, census records, and photos of some of the people who gave her clues along the way, as well as pictures of two slaveholders' houses and the reunion with the family she didn't know.

Sandra Bean Milton's research shows how the death of a slave owner ripped one family apart.

Ms. Milton shares her research techniques and is likely to inspire you to start on your own genealogical research.
