Brian Saltsburg is inviting you to a casual potluck / bonfire at Dockweiler State Beach being done to honor Servas SYLE youth traveler, Aurelien, from France who will be staying with him. Bring whatever you need (blankets, chairs, tables) and some food and drink to share and some firewood if you have it. There will be a bonfire with a grill for grilling. Brian will contribute multiple dishes: marshmallows, candy bars and graham crackers for s'mores, a few melons for fruit, maybe roasted sweet potatoes to be warmed on the fire, and a few high- quality sausages. Kabob skewers with chicken and or grilled veggies are always popular. Chips get soggy fast, but other munchables, pizza, etc. are nice.
Dockweiler State Beach --Imperial Highway and Vista Del Mar. Enter parking area and pay $9. The closest free parking is about 1/2 mile east on the side streets near Imperial Highway. Plan to arrive between 6:30 & sunset at 7:59 PM, After entering the parking area, pay your fee and turn RIGHT (on South Marine Ave) to car park area. Turn left into the first parking lot. Goal will be to get a fire ring as close to the entrance to this parking area (as opposed to the ocean), and as close to the north side of lifeguard tower 55 as possible. There are no reservations so it is first-come-first-served. Pin drop locations don't work well on the beach but Brian will describe the location to everyone who has texted or WhatsApped him AHEAD OF TIME. (You will get his number in the registration confirmation & reminder emails after you make your reservation.) However, once the event starts he may not check his phone often so you may have to explore a bit to find him and the Servas group.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Dogs and alcohol are not allowed. If you do bring something alcoholic to drink, be sure drink it from a cup so it isn't obvious. You will likely encounter marijuana and cigarette smoke and adult language so if you are bringing kids be forewarned. Consider prevailing winds when choosing where to put your blanket/chairs, etc. When the fire is going smoke will blow in at least one direction — usually toward the parking lot. Brian may stay till 11pm or so but if you are enjoying yourself, you are welcome to leave at your leisure.
