by Matheus Nienow, Servas Brazil
NOTE: Matheus is from Bom Principio, Brazil; he is the National Secretary of Servas Brazil. He currently works in a bank and is planning a career in the diplomatic service. He was hosted in Oregon from March 4 - 27. Most of his time was spent in Eugene, but he also had a chance to meet with Servas members on the Oregon coast, and in the Portland area.
I am Matheus from Servas Brazil, and I joined our community in 2018. Since then, I have been connecting and traveling with Servas members around the world, visiting countries such as India, Germany, France, and Luxembourg. Recently, I finally had the opportunity to visit the United States, thanks to an invitation from Marguerite and David Hills. For the past three years, I had been dreaming about participating in an English SYLE program — Servas Youth Language Experience — and their invitation was just the push I needed to jump aboard and pack my bags.
My experience took place in the state of Oregon, where I visited several cities, explored beautiful landscapes, and most importantly, met incredible people. One of my first impressions was how genuinely friendly everyone was, always ready to strike up a conversation in parks and other public spaces. Throughout my journey, I had the pleasure of meeting about 70 people, including Servas members and their friends. It was an enriching experience where I not only improved my English but also immersed myself in the local culture — a culture shaped by a rich mix of migrants and immigrants from all over the world. By my own count, I met only two people who were originally born in Oregon, which gave me a deep appreciation for the state's diverse and dynamic spirit.
Thanks to Servas, my trip was filled with unforgettable first-time experiences: cross-country skiing near Gold Lake, indoor climbing, dining at a Chinese restaurant, playing trivia at a bar, visiting the famous "track town,” going to concerts and pubs, filling my bag with $1 secondhand books, exploring the city of Springfield (yes, that Springfield!), visiting the world’s largest independent bookstore, watching a Brazilian awarded movie at the cinema with English subtitles, visiting cohousing places, communicating via radio waves, going to the Pacific Ocean, riding an electric tricycle made by a Servas member, and much more. Moreover, I had the chance to connect with people from various backgrounds, origins, and life stories. Each encounter was unique and enriching. I am happy to carry those memories and lessons with me back to Brazil.
I am deeply grateful to Servas and the wonderful Oregon community who welcomed me during the 24 days of my journey. Thanks to all of you, I gained new knowledge, made lifelong friends, and created joyful moments that strengthened the spirit of our peaceful movement. Let’s keep exchanging, connecting, and spreading joy around the world — even with friends we have yet to meet.
