In an era of online learning, the Servas Youth Language Experience (SYLE) offers younger memembers (18-30’) a unique pathway to cultural fluency through its immersive travel program with person-to-person connections. Designed for young adult Servas members, SYLE allows participants to spend a month in a country of their choice, living with local host families to improve language skills and cultural understanding. The program is not only tuition free, but travel expense scholarships are available.

As with all Servas travel, participants are not just tourists but active members in the daily lives and customs of their host communities.

Travel isn’t cheap so US Servas has announced specific financial support for participants. US Servas is offering scholarships in addition to one made possible by the generous donation of long-time Servas member Dennis Mogerman.

• The Mogerman Scholarship: Named after long-time member Dennis Mogerman. The fund offers two annual scholarships of $1,000 each. It is available to U.S. residents planning to study a language other than English through SYLE. Recipients are expected to contribute to a "marketing campaign" by sharing photos and articles about their journey.

• US Servas Grants: Ten separate $1,000 grants are available for US Servas members under 30. Those with financial need receive priority. Recipients are expected to help promote the organization via social media and an article for the Open Doors newsletter.

Eligibility and Application

SYLE programs are open exclusively to US Servas members. Prospective travelers must have a validated Letter of Introduction (LOI) before applying. Because the programs are custom tailored to suit individual goals, please allow three to four months for planning.

While fluency in a foreign language is not a prerequisite, applicants must demonstrate a genuine desire to learn and engage deeply with their hosts’ language and culture.

Are you ready to start your global journey? Visit the US Servas SYLE webpage to learn more about membership requirements or contact the coordinators at Youth@usservas.org.
