Sam Tan a Fine Young Man

Many of us old timers hope that younger travelers find as much joy in Servas travel and hosting as we have. Last week we had occasion to welcome an enthusiastic 26-year-old Chinese man into our home, and it confirmed that young people still enjoy the cross-cultural experiences that Servas offers. We also confirmed that Servas Travelers are indeed an interesting, unique breed. Let me explain.

Sam came to the US six years ago to attend UC Berkeley. He spoke no English. He just completed his bachelor's program in June and will attend grad school this Fall in Toronto. When we spoke on the phone to finalize a visit, I could detect a slight accent, but not a lot. During his stay I was amazed at the extent of his vocabulary and understanding of the nuances of English. In fact, we discussed the Latin roots and meanings of patriot, patriarch, and patriarchy.

Sam is very interested in different and unique cultures. Since he spent the past six years on the West Coast, he is now traversing the US East Coast to experience the lifestyle differences between coasts. My wife, Marie Spodek, and I now live in Philadelphia which is fairly close to Amish country in Lancaster County. Once I mentioned them and their unique culture, Sam wanted to see them, so we made an afternoon excursion to the village of Intercourse (near Bird In Hand, PA). Yep, those old Pennsylvania Dutch had a sense of humor. Sam thought it was a riot and wanted a photo of the sign. He also wanted a t-shirt with the name, but alas, American sizes were all too big for his slender frame.

We took another ride with to Doylestown, PA to visit the Mercer Museum of antique tools and devices. Like us, Sam was intrigued by the enormous, four-story, rambling, castle-like building that housed the huge exhibit.

Sam is now Servas hopping his way down the Eastern seaboard. His next stop after Philly will be Washington, DC, and then North Carolina. He is winging it as he goes, learning of places to see from each new host, so be on the lookout for a hosting request from this fun, energetic guy.

We hosted Sam, maybe right after you did, here in Greenbelt, MD (near Washington DC). Sam was very curious about historic Greenbelt and about cooperative communities in the USA. He was a great SERVAS traveler and we enjoyed having him for two nights.

So good to read about Servas hosts enjoying time with my friend Sam. I had the good fortune to have been his interviewer out here in Berkeley a few years ago. We became friends and did some fun things.
